Mulberry F/W16 Selwood

Other Brands

Truth be told, I’ve spent the better part of this day staring intently at Mulberry’s newSelwood, a new bag that you’ll find listed on their website’s Coming Soon page. Which also means in the coming weeks, you’ll be able to purchase this bag online (or in their brick-and-mortar stores around the world).

And while this is the part where I usually launch into the part where I tell you why this bag is a good-buy, a don’t-buy or even a die-die-must-buy, frankly, with theSelwood, I am actually kinda stuck.

Thing is, there’s nothing wrong with the bag. While on the flip side, there’s nothing right with it either. Let me explain. The Selwood is like that quiet girl in class that while nice and pleasant, had no personality. You would even call her a wallflower, which is what this bag kinda is. Measuring some 24 cm by 18 cm, the shiny calf leather shoulder sling is unremarkably simple, save for the brass-finished metal bar that’s also the clasp of the bag, where you first slide the top flap over before securing it by inserting the lower leather tab.

With a long enough sling that you can adjust to 3 different lengths to wear it however you prefer, the bag opens to 3 compartments on the inside, along with an additional zip pocket in the middle and another patch pocket on the side, which should make organisation a breeze, especially for those OCD amongst you.

But that’s about it really. I really wish I had more to say about it, but I’m afraid that’s it from me for now folks. Maybe I’ll change my mind over time, maybe I won’t, but who would want the ‘wallflower of bags’ when there’s always the popular girl in class around whom everybody wants to be friends with, or the goth punk-chic classmate who at least at some real personality. The Selwood, on both counts, is sadly not. But if you disagree, do look out for it when it’s launched soon, where it will be priced atGBP995 online in Burgundy, Emerald and Midnight.

Spicy Christmas!!

Other Brands

I just can’t help it, but I am excited! Anxious for Christmas to start! Or wait; it already began. Because, while I am writing this article I’m looking at my Christmas tree, eating Christmas chocolates and listening to Christmas carols. And most of all, I had the best Christmas party with 30 girls last night!

Don’t you think that this is the perfect outfit for such a Christmas party (except for the heels: I don’t know what I was thinking but after 30 minutes of dancing I needed a lot more shots to ease the pain).  But anyway, I just love wearing this little black dress with the super merry bag and this special cape to spice it all up. As you know, green is my favourite colour this season, especially in soft suede and in combination with the swinging fringes and subtle sparkles. This eye-catcher is by Spicy Scarves, a label that creates products that are unique, exclusive and tell a story. And that is just what I like about an item. Although I sincerely love this ZARA beaded drawstring bag, it can’t be qualified as uncommon or one of a kind. But it twinkles so I decided to opt for it. And I obviously have this cape to compensate… The designer travelled the world and was fascinated about how beautiful both East and West can be. These scarves, that are created in Amsterdam, are a representation of the best of both worlds. So for all of you who don’t know what to ask for Christmas, take a closer look at the Spicy Scarves as they are classy, glamorous and jaunty. And it will definitely add some ‘flavour’ to your Christmas outfit!

And to make things easier for you, today you can find Spicy Scarves at the Swan Market in Rotterdam, de Pier in Scheveningen and the Albert Cuyp in Amsterdam.

Look who’s back with a sweet surprise. Tod’s is featuring its T Shoulder Bag once more but this time in a small shoulder bag version. If you remember, this Italian brand already released the said bag not long ago but in a mini cross body version.

If you want to talk about refined and sophisticated fashion taste, this Small Double T Shoulder Bag is the bag to go for it features a fine grainy black leather with maroon-hued trims that makes the leather stand out. The silver-tone hardware and silver-tone chain also makes a bright contrast against the backdrop of dark leather.

Although small in size, this bag is roomy enough to hold all your essential from office, to lunch breaks and to dinner dates as well. It features a magnetic fastening, snap-buttoned back pocket and an internal zipped pocket.

Comparing with the first version, the newer Double T bag is curvier, there is also a handle on the top and it features a chained link. The older one on the other hand is more squared and has a structural design.Tods-Small-Double-T-Shoulder-Bag-4

Alexander McQueen Padlock Mini Elaphe Zip Satchel: Snake Eyes

Other Brands

We love exotics because well, they’re exotic, but this takes the jungle vibe a step further. It’s downright dangerous looking! And who doesn’t crave the element of danger every now and again?

The basic shape allows the skin to take center stage (that’s good because any additional flair would shove this over the edge), and the super-snaky effect delivers plenty of drama, which Alexander McQueen has never been known to shy away from. Come on, this is a brand whose signature is an often-bedazzled skull! Neutral elaphe looks great on an otherwise simple and smallish satchel; this organic pattern is strong enough to speak for itself.

High-gloss and in-your-face: this might be too much for some, but I happen to like nature in its most natural form, and this feels like something straight out of the jungle that belongs right on your arm.

Wear with: I like the idea of a basic boot with retro flair matched against this shiny exotic. Miu Miu’s suede platform booties are funky and simple at once.

Today, I’m tackling one of the most frequent questions I receive – Hermes Kelly, sellier or retourne style?

Because I’m either a crazy lunatic or have remarkable willpower (it all depends on how big of a Kelly fan you are, for your perspective) I have two black Kelly bags, both in size 28cm. I love both, and can say with a straight face that they each occupy unique places in my wardrobe. Yes, that’s right. These are very different bags (to me). Now, a little bit on each style…

Kelly Comparison

Sellier: Sellier in terms of a Kelly refers to its outside stitching, on its edges which results in the bag’s crisp, sharp lines. The outside stitching is obviously more visible, so more attention must be paid to the craftsmanship. In my opinion, this is one of the most beautiful bag shapes ever…so clean and architectural.

Hermes Sellier Kelly Edge

My sellier Kelly is a 28cm, black box leather with ruthenium hardware. Black box is such a fantastic leather, and in fact I’ve had an order outstanding for another black box Kelly for something like three years now. I’m not sure if Hermes is ever going to fulfill it, and I suspect it may have gone into the black hole these orders sometime disappear into, only surfacing to serve as amusement for Hermes executives during lunch breaks. “And get this….she wants 40cm, and she thinks she’s going to get it in ombre lizard!” they shriek, over glasses of wine.

28cm is also the largest size sellier that I’d use for dressier occasions. I’m too short to pull off anything larger. I don’t have any recent pictures of me with my Kelly, but here’s one when I was six months pregnant. When placed strategically, it does a pretty good job of hiding a baby bump!

Pros: The most beautiful Kelly style and shape, in my opinion. Tends to “droop” or sag less over time, as the retourne Kellys do, simply due to their construction.

Cons: While the bag looks larger due to its construction and defined angles (you can see this for yourself in the first comparison photo above ), it actually fits a bit less than the retourne, due to its construction and the lack of flexibility. So you’re getting a visually bigger bag….but one that holds less! Also, costs a bit more than retourne (due to the higher craftsmanship involved, I’m told).

Now, onto the retourne style.

Retourne Kelly Edge

Retourne: Whereas sellier refers to the outside stitching of the Kelly, retourne refers to the inside stitching of the bag’s edges – observe the piping on the edges, can you see how it’s a bit like if someone sewed it and then turned it inside out? This makes the bag a bit “softer” at the edges, and more flexible (there’s no piping on sellier Kellys).

My retourne Kelly is a 28cm, black chevre with gold hardware. I tend to use this more as a casual bag – and I love my short shoulder strap, it makes the bag so comfortable and easy to wear. Both the strap and the Kelly itself were special ordered in their configuration.

Pros: Fits more than the sellier of the same size, also more flexible. Costs a bit less, and if you do a special order, you can play with the piping color (always fun). The edges also tend to “stick out” less – I’m always a bit paranoid with the sellier about hitting it on corners. Also, you can more easily go casual.

Cons: Not as “formal” of a look as the selliers, also due to the construction can sag over time (especially in the larger sizes). You can see in my comparison photos, how the retourne Kelly has a bit of “slouch” in places, whereas the sellier sits perfect straight – even though its six years older!

Kelly side by side

So – now after all that, back to the original question – sellier or retourne? Let me apologize in advance…for I’m going to be copping out with the ultimate non definitive response, which is “it depends“. On your lifestyle, and what you’re buying the Kelly for.

If you’re buying for mainly dressier events, and/or just to “have” the Kelly and stare at it in your closet? Then I might get the sellier. It’s absolutely beautiful, and in sellier, won’t sag very much over time at all and you can give it to your children.

For myself, if I absolutely had to choose one – it’d be retourne then, as my life is more casual than dressy. And with a 28cm, I can still get away with using my retourne for dressier occasions (anything black tie, etc I’d use a hand held clutch anyway).
